- With the recent update of ISO 22003-1 for Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) certification in 2022, certain audit and certification requirements have been revised. These updates may impact your certification process. Below is a summary of the key updates to help you understand and prepare for the related requirements:
Key Updates - Audit Duration Requirements: The duration of on-site audits may be adjusted based on the complexity of your organization, preparation time, meeting and communication needs to ensure compliance with standard requirements.
- Defining Certification Scope: All FSMS-related activities, processes, and products must be accurately reflected within the certification scope. The wording should be clear and should not include promotional claims or branding. (According to section 9.1.2.3)
- Multi-Site Sampling: For organizations with up to 20 sites, all sites must be audited unless they fall under specific categories. (According to section 9.1.5.6 e)
- Initial Audit Requirements: The Stage 1 audit for initial certification must be conducted on-site at your company to ensure a thorough understanding of your FSMS in preparation for Stage 2. (According to section 9.3.5)
- Stage 1 Audit Expectations: The purpose of the Stage 1 audit is to assess your organization’s preparedness for FSMS and to set the focus for the Stage 2 audit. (According to section 9.3.2)
- Unannounced Audits: In special circumstances, such as incident investigations, unannounced audits may be conducted to ensure thoroughness. (According to section 9.6.2)
- Extended Guidance on Certification Mark Usage: Certification marks cannot be used on product packaging, nor can it be claimed that products have "passed FSMS certification." (According to sections 8.3 and 8.4)
- Pre-Audit Questionnaire
Before your initial or subsequent audits, please complete a questionnaire to ensure we have the latest information on your products and services. If there have been changes within the certification scope or if there are any undisclosed areas, please inform us. The questionnaire includes: - Product/Service Information: Provide the names of all food products/services within the scope (include product photos), describe the final product type or service, and provide a manufacturing process flowchart or HACCP plan.
- Applicable Food Safety Regulations: List all applicable food safety-related regulations.
- Outsourced Processes: Specify any outsourced processes, such as OEM, packaging, equipment calibration, product testing, sterilization, and environmental sanitation.
